Preggos

I am sure most girls may have experienced this...Don't know about you but as a woman, i find it very upsetting and picked on when i go to  the hospital and after telling the doctor what is wrong with me, he proceeds to ask series of questions which i don't mind until he asks that annoying question of "when was the last time you saw your period?"Seriously? Why ask me that? would he have asked a more ill man than i was that question? Or are all sick women pregnant? Or did he think I wouldn't know if i were pregnant? Or do i look the type who is most likely to get pregnant?? These amongst other questions is what i angrily ask myself.

So on one of my many but brief trips to the hospital, i made it a point to ask about the reason for "last seen period" question. As already anticipated, i was asked and  i quoted, day, date and time. Then i politely but sternly asked the doctor the reason for that question and asked him the many other questions i often asked myself whenever i was asked that particular question. He explained by saying, most doctors ask the "period" question in order to rule out any possible case of pregnancy before they prescribe or administer any drug to the patient. He explained that some drugs are harmful to pregnancies especially if the pregnancy is in its early stages. He added that fortunately or unfortunately its only women who get pregnant and that is why he as a doctor will keep asking that question even if it makes any woman uncomfortable. Except of course if pregnancy is very evident and  visible or has aready been medically confirmed. He said "I wouldn't want to be responsible for a deformed baby or a possible miscarriage due to a drug I ignorantly and innocently administered to a sick woman who happened to be pregnant" . "My intention is to gather as much information as possible to come to a conclusive diagnosis and treatment for all my patients, "To pry on anyones sexual life is not one my favourite past times" lol...

With that said, I left the consulting room very informed and happy. Next time i am asked the 'period' question i'll know the doctor only has my best interest at heart! Even if i am only seeing that doctor for the very first time.
