....So i have been on some special kind of diet for the past 5 weeks. I don't eat heavy meals after 6pm or otherwise I'll have to wait for some hours before going to bed. Trying to control my weight...hehhehehehe....Anyway...I got home last night around 8pm and there was some boiled yam and garden egg stew waiting for me as supper. Immediately i turned it down, knowing it was way past my self imposed 'food curfew' so to speak but then again I remembered that i hadn't exactly eaten any food the whole day except for a cup of coffee I had earlier in the morning.(sometimes i go a whole day without eating anything at all. When it comes to eating habits, I am a mess but i am glad to say that i am work in progress towards my bad eating habits!) I thought of what else to eat which wasn't too heavy since it was already late and i had no intentions of staying up late. Shortly, I had an idea of something i can do with the yam, a food I was forbidden to eat...a meal I was denied even though i liked it very much
I decided to mash my yam and add red oil to it. A meal locally called "Ot)" "3t)" in Ga and Akan languages respectively. Sometimes partly ripe boiled plantain is used instead of yam and groundnuts are added as well. Personally, I prefer "Ot)" when it's made with boiled yam and with boiled eggs to go along with it.The last time i ate 'Ot)' was at a friends house where i spent the
weekend as part of her bridal party. This was about two years and until
recently it has never crossed my mind to prepare this meal since i was
now old enough to eat what ever food i want to eat under this planet! I haven't been able to eat this favourite delicacy of mine because my father had said "Ot)" is a food for the gods so we as Christians should not eat food meant for sacrifices to lesser gods. For this reason my father placed an embargo on the preparation of that food in my house and we were never to eat it anywhere else also. How can food from my house in my own kitchen be food for gods? And my
mother who cooked it be transformed from being my mother to a fetish
priestess, making sacrifices to some gods in my house which were so not in existence! Or did her children just become gods just by eating their mothers food? and to think that it's the same ingredients they used for their supper that same night only i have decided to have mine in a different way? How ridiculous can that be?! Same yam and same red oil and boiled eggs miraculously becomes food for gods? Ah!
I really can't say if i actually wanted to eat "Ot)" or it was my intention to rebel against daddy. Within 5 minutes my meal was ready and i enjoyed every bit of it. I made sure i made enough and saved some for my dad to give to him when he comes back from town. Guess what? When i served my dad he readily accepted and said "thank you" digging into it with a spoon in his left hand and smiling all through. What am I missing? Hellooooo.....It's "Ot)"! Don't you have anything to say???????
