Children have always been a handful for me and if there is one thing i can't stand about them its their inability to sit at one place especially in unfamiliar environments. I know children have natural instincts to play and i get it when they play at home or when they go visiting Grannies and Aunties and they run around but not when you take them to social functions like weddings and parties and they are all over the place getting dirty and all and eating from the plates of strangers. Definitely a no no for me.
The older they are they more irritated i get with their fidgeting. As kids its ok for them to forget themselves and join the other indisciplined kids and run around but when mummy calls or gives you the look to comport yourself, i expect that kid to comply. There is nothing more irritating than an uncontrolled kid in the midst of strangers. Doesn't speak well of the mother.
I visited the out patients department of the Holy Trinity hospital last week and as I waited my turn to see a doctor , i witnessed a few unpleasant parent kid situations. Children are funny you know, they are restless all night and then when it's morning you wonder if it's the same child who kept you awake all night. Malaria sometimes do that , even in adults. Anyway... back to the story, As i sat i noticed there were these two kids amongst the other kids whom i didn't like very much. The first child was a toddler who was about 18 months old. This kid was gradually making his baby steps away from where his mum sat. The disturbing part was that he had in his hand some plastic toy which he kept biting on. Occasionally the toy will fall from his grip unto the floor and he will pick it up and then back into his mouth. The toddler also drummed on the empty seats with this toy then back into his mouth. Ewwww..... each time the toy fell i flinched in my seat and vomited in my mouth. Meanwhile his mother was quite okay with it which i find rather unusual and very irresponsible. The second was about six years old and he was running all over the place, standing on benches, and entering into rooms restricted to the people. I couldn't even tell who his parents were. I was more upset with this kid and his behaviour because i do not understand why a child his age just can't sit on his butts.
Parents, a hospital is a place where sick people go to, sick people with various illnesses, contagious and infectious diseases. Your sick kids must be by your side at all times when you are at the hospital except if you hand them over to a medical staff; otherwise they either remain seated by you( that is if they are old enough to sit) or sit on your laps or be in your arms or on your shoulders or remain at your back. You must be able to have physical contact with your kids as your wait your turn and not allow your kids to ward off like stray puppies. Even if they resist and scream their lungs out, maintain your stance because it's for their own good. You came to the hopsital to fix a problem and not to fix one and take another illness home. Hospitals are not recreational centres for kids and you don't bring their toys along with them especially for those who can't hold on to them!!
